13 Little Blue Envelopes

by Maureen Johnson
Fiction
352 pages

The first of 13 envelopes contains $1000 and instructions to buy a plane ticket. And none of the other 12 contains anything less puzzling or crazy to Ginny.

Ginny’s Aunt Peg has never been very dependable or stable, running away from her family and living in all kinds of places around the world while trying to become an artist. But the 13 envelopes that she has assembled for Ginny before her death from a brain tumor are stranger than anything she had ever done in the past.

Ginny has always been a little boring and each of the envelopes include tasks and directions aimed directly at pushing her out in the world, especially into Europe. The directions lead her to all kinds of places and people, including a quirky artist name Keith who is producing a play entitled “Starbucks: The Musical.”

Because of her aunt’s urging, Ginny finds herself traveling and living by her wits, which eventually show her that she can function in this crazy world, even on her own.
