Because of Winn-Dixie

by Kate DiCamillo
Award Winners
288 pages

“Just about everything that happened to me that summer happened because of Winn-Dixie,” (pg. 60). I chose this quote because it sums up how her summer changed. Winn-Dixie changed every thing in just a few short months.
India Opal Buloni is the Preacher’s daughter. She n went to the grocery store called Winn-Dixie to get a few things but instead came home with a stray dog. Since Opal was new to town Winn-Dixie (her dog) helped her meet new and interesting people. She was very found of all her friends she planned a party to have them all together with Winn-Dixie. At the party a thunder storm came and since Winn-Dixie has a fear of them he ran away. Opal and her father look for him but could not find him. After a while of searching Opal and her dad decided to go back to the party were everyone is looking for them. When they get back they find a big surprise.
In the beginning of the book Opal missed her mother (who had left when she was very young) and felt lonely. When she found win-Dixie he showed her new people and a new life. By the end of the book she found out that her life is pretty good, and now she is happy. The theme of this book is life can change. Opal learned this at the end of the book when she finds Winn-Dixie. Opal has her happy family. One thing that changed in my life was when I had to but my dog to sleep.
This book was made into a movie. Though the detail of Winn-Dixie under the bed howling was left out; it was still a good movie.
