Pieces of Georgia

by Jen Bryant

Family and Relationships
ISBN:
166 pages

“I wanted her to know
that sometimes living with Daddy’s sadness,
and a hyper hunting dog,
and the ghost of my mother,
and a super-athletic best friend
was just too much.”

Georgia’s new red journal, given to her by the school counselor, is where she records thought like these about her somewhat unhappy life. At first, she isn’t sure how she will fill all the empty pages, but soon she begins to find some unanticipated comfort while writing.

Georgia also receives an unexpected, anonymous gift in the mail: a year-long membership to the local art museum where she discovers the art work of the Wyeth family. Like her dead mother, Georgia has a gift for art, which seems to make her widowed father even sadder as it brings back memories of his late wife whenever he sees his daughter sketching.

Although she spends many hours alone, Georgia is surrounded by people who care for her, such as the school nurse who lets her lie and watch the fish when she’s feeling sad and her art teacher who encourages her to apply at a school for gifted art students. There is also her unlikely best friend Tiffany, whose over-scheduled life makes Georgia feel like a loser.

Eventually, Georgia takes advantage of the healing care that those around her are offering and learns that her talent and good heart will help keep her connected to her mother’s memory, not just make her miserable.
